Quite a while now...
Yeah, I guess it has been a wee bit over 2 weeks since I last posted a blog post here.
I've been spending time mostly thinking about home. About... the fun and the great times I should have had with my family and friends in the course of the whole 4 month summer break that I had. Instead, I guess, I ended up alone, with my coursework, with no free time for my friends, and sparing free time for my family.
Make no mistake, I am relieved to pass my exams, and I do not wish for anyone to experience what I have experienced. But I make it clear that this summer may have well been the one time for me to enjoy the company of those whom I will find hard to visit in the future.
I guess I would say that... for now, I will be leaving the posts here picture-less, as my IBM computer does not support USB 2.0, so it would take a very long time to transfer photos from my camera to the laptop.
Anyway, where shall I start? Home? Yeah, I think home should cut it.
I arrived home in KL on the 23rd of September, and that night, my uncle (mum's brother) picked me up from KLIA, as my parents had not returned from their 9 day trip from Sydney (in which, I was initially penned in to go as well). As I arrived on a Saturday evening, my uncle took me to McDonalds at the Petronas/Shell station near the Tropicana exit for the toll. I was very exhausted upon arrival in KL, due to the gigantuous amounts of jetlag I had experienced over the two days of travelling.
I ended up sleeping in my parents' bedroom, watching TV on the plasma 50 inch TV my dad had bought last year.
That is what I want for Dublin too. Well, something to constantly remind me of the pleasures of home living.
Extravagant, perhaps, but I really enjoyed my time back in KL.
Anyway, continuing about home, on the first day back, the initial plan was for Sunday morning/afternoon be dedicated to visiting Tuck Lam and meeting up with him and Lorraine at Mid Valley. Alas, that did not materialise as Tuck Lam had an exam on the Monday (if I recall correctly), and Lorraine was back in Bahau, packing for her trip back to Dublin.
Instead, I headed down to Lucky Garden with my uncle to grab some food from the Nam Chuan corner coffee shop to grab some lovely Malaysian food... I had my usual chap fun, my mixed rice, a combination of steamed egg, sweet & sour pork, meatball, longbeans (or French beans, one of them anyway), and the fried chicken (makes me drool whenever I remind myself of it.
That day, I mostly relaxed and got over my jetlag as my parents only arrived on the Sunday evening. Thus, I also had a rice meal for dinner on that Sunday night, eating at the same coffee shop, with double helping of Tofu, and chicken rice to boot.
Following which, I went to the airport with my uncle and picked up my parents, which was fun. Especially when you sit in a car as comfortable as the E280 we have (1997 model). By the way, that is a Mercedes I talk of.
The funny thing about the E280 we have is that the car doesn't seem that fast (in fact, it feels slow) at 110kmh. Even my dad says so, when he drives at 150kmh on the day he sent me back (I'll get to that later).
Anyway, yeah, the same Sunday night, my uncle drove back to Melaka. And thus, the mass unpacking of bags began, where my parents bought me new clothes, a new pair of shoes courtesy of a family friend's son whom I am very well acquainted with.
On Monday, the 25th, my dad went back to work as usual, and on that same day, he placed a priority order on my EOS400d... my new dSLR camera which is one of the coolest cameras.. CORRECTION! The COOLEST camera I have had.. It's big too.. *sigh*
But anyway, yeah, well, my dad came home for lunch, telling me that the camera was on order, as it was currently out of stock. The new stock wasn't scheduled to come in till Friday, one day before I left.
After lunch, the ragged day began, with a family trip down to Sungai Wang. Thank goodness I don't have to ever go pay for parking at Sungai Wang itself or anything. The wonders of having a good EQ (as my dad puts it) and contacts is that we have free parking at a building nearby, next to Imbi Plaza. And it doesn't have the sun blasting its rays at the car!
So in Sungai Wang, I learnt that the old DVD shop I frequented had turned into a bag/clothes shop. But, that doesn't really affect me that much as I usually shop for games mainly. My game shop was still happily running its business, and as usual I spent quite a bit there (yeah, those who know me, I don't spend much on DVDs, but alot on GAMES). Looked up the latest PS2 games, Nintendo games and the PSP games. I found out that efforts to create a modified XBOX 360 had been successful, which was great to hear, however the XBOX 360 was prone to crashing as a result.
Well, then I headed upstairs to the IT section of Sungai Wang, where I saw my ol' computer shop, and bought new applications for my computer here, mainly computer games and applications for photo editing for my new Canon. At the same time, my computer shop also has a sizable supply of anime, so I decided to go and take a peek at what stock they had. Surprisingly, I bought perhaps, only, 3 DVDs of anime.
In total, excluding the camera cost, it was nearly RM1000 spent.
Why it came to RM1000? Because I forgot to mention one more thing. I went to Low Yat Plaza to look for a Compact Flash card for my new camera. Bought a 2GB one, although it is going to take a damn long time to upload the pictures to the computer with that one. Then, at the same time, I looked at the IPOD accessories, and I found a MicroMemo for my Ipod which enables me to make an audio recording of the lectures.
I forgot to mention, but I also had dropped by Kamal's Medical Bookstore. Kamal is an old patient of my dad's, so we know the shop quite a bit. I bought my Guyton Physiology, my Ganong Physiology, Page et al Pharmacology, a 6th edition Kumars & Clark, Sadler's Embryology, and Lippincott's Biochem books.
Those two along cost me RM350 at least.
By that time, my parents were fantastically tired too. So was I. We ended up eating whatever we had at home for dinner. My dad was sleepy and tired.
Now, we shall head to Tuesday. Tuesday, I woke up at 11am, having slept at 4am on the Tuesday morning, and immediately accompanied my mum to the bank, as well as to buy more lunch. This time, from the same Nam Chuan coffee shop, I had Chee Cheong Fun and popiah. Yeah, if people ever wonder how I gain so much weight, my staple diet usually consists of food from the coffee shop, without any exercise in the latter point of the day.
Anyway, had lunch, and then, that afternoon, we headed down to Computer Wars in SS (something), and looked at a new mouse (which I proudly posted on my Livejournal blog), as well as look for a particular Logitech ultraflat keyboard for my brother.
Alas, we had to order the keyboard, but the mouse was there. At the same time, we were persuaded to buy a slightly better Compact Flash card at the same time.
Computer Wars has some really nice people, especially one of the workers there is really funny and nice (in some ways, he reminds me of a Barry-ish look...). We bought most of the parts for our computers from that shop, as we get some really funky deals from the shop. And my dad's streetsmartness helps there too. But we're always the friendly buyers of his stuff.
Anyway, we'll come back here another time.
We went home after that, only to get ready for dinner with my family and our family friends.
Went to Overseas Restaurant at Amcorp Mall. The food wasn't too bad, but I suppose there's always room for improvement. Had a grand time with my friend, who was also flying off to Cardiff via Amsterdam on the same day that Lorraine and Xin Yi were flying to Dublin, via Amsterdam. All three were on the same flight on KLM, but I don't think any of them met my friend. Haha..
This family friend of mine, if you look up friendster, he is S@m, on my friends list. A really nice guy, I remember the days we grew up together, collecting coins, stamps, our common interest in games (he likes DOTA). He also knows Jason Yong and Terry Kok.. In fact, he was Terry's old best friend back in Primary School that time.
Anyway yeah, just had a dinner together, seems like both of us seem to keep getting our backsides in hot water. 2nd year in a row that he has had a repeat exam to take.
Well, anyway, we had a dinner and then went home. Rested, I started playing Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, alot on the computer at home, as the internet connection suffered from what myself and my brothers consider to be MALWARE/SPYWARE/VIRUS.
Wednesday, now I woke up at around 11am again, having slept around 4am, in the back room. Went to the bank again, albeit a different one, this one Allianz Bank (dad was an ex-board member there), and deposited more cheques.
That afternoon, I headed down to Sungai Wang again, with my dad, in hope of finding an anti-virus program that could eradicate the internet connection problem plagueing my desktop. However, despite installing 3 anti-virus programs, there was still alot of problems.
So I decided to leave it at that.
I also returned to Sungai Wang to drop by my game shop to use my PSP with a new program that allows me to play the new games up to version 2.71 while at the same time keeping the hardware version on the actual PSP at 1.5.
That was it I suppose.
I can't recall too much of that day.
Actually, I do now.
That night, I had dinner at Klang, a place which had seafood meals. The guy who cooked and ran the place was a friend of my dad's friend. This guy and his wife, he invited me and my parents as well as another couple to dinner here. Of course, I am the only young one, as the others are all in their 60s.
Lovely people, the guy who brought us to the place, he ordered Crab, fried and steamed (mm mm mm), onion rings (which have another name... argh, i forgot :S), fried rice, steamed prawn, and mee hoon.
A very filling meal, which had its own bottle of wine provided by the other couple, and the uncle who brought us to the place had his usual order of Guiness. The host's wife (the uncle's wife), studied at UCD, and did medicine as well.
Well, that was my half of my week in Malaysia come and gone.
Thursday, after so many days delaying, we went to Mid-Valley in the evening, as I had wanted to earlier, but didn't have the time to (and jet lag persisted as well). I bouhgt myself a new supply of highlighters and pens, as the stationery section of the Jusco had reopened. That afternoon, my camera arrived. It was like, WHOA! HOW AWESOME IS THIS!.. hehe..
That afternoon I also took the oppurtunity to spend 5 minutes at the Mont Kiara nightmarket rustling for my Archie comics. I spent RM70 on Archie comics, in 2 minutes, that is fast.
Haha...
Well, for dinner, we were at Mid Valley, where I managed to have my tau foo fah, as well as my Esquire Kitchen dinner.
Up to this point, only on this day (Thursday), did I have lunch that did not originate from Nam Chuan coffeeshop. I went to the coffee shop called Lok Tim just opposite the Nam Chuan coffeeshop to get something to eat with my mum.
Oh yeah, I forgot, on Tuesday, I went to BS Tan Optometry to get my eyes double checked and to order a new glass frame. I collected my new frame on Thursday and to this day, I wear them. It is quite amazing no one actually realised that I had worn different glass frames.
Ah, I forgot to mention too, that up to the 27th (Wednesday) night, I kept in constant touch with Lorraine, haha... kacauing her as usual.
On Friday now, and although technically a Catholic shouldn't eat meat on Friday, I sank my teeth into the food at Nam Chuan as per usual. That was lunch. I collected the Keyboard from Computer Wars on this day, and that was with my dad. I also saw my grandmother (on my mum's side) arrive from Melaka, with my cousin and my mum's brother and sister-in-law. However, it was rightfully stressful for everyone that my grandmother made the trip just to see me.
My grandmother's blood pressure, when she was on her way, hit 200/80... and at the time of checking at my home, it was 170/90 on her right arm, and 160/80 on her left. o_O..
My cousin, she had come by to KL from Melaka for an interview. With Hong Leong Bank I think. Haha. I haven't actually spoken to her for a long time until that Friday.
Yeah well, I was to fly on Saturday morning, so I hardly got two hours sleep that night, as I sorted out my dad's income tax, as well as cleaned up the TV room abit, finished packing and tagging my bags, strapping them. Slept at 4.30am and woke up at 6am. Flight was at 9am, so I went to the airport at 6.40-ish in the morning, reaching the airport within the half hour. Check in was a breeze as the upgrade to business class afforded me more free time.
My parents headed down to Melaka following sending me off while I headed sadly and gloomily back to Dublin.
Unfortunately, I no longer look forward to returning to the land of the cold cold times. The only things that keep me going here are my friends who remind me so much of what home is, and how special it is.
I thoroughly enjoyed my week in KL. I wouldn't give a crap if people called me rich, because what mattered to me was that I enjoyed myself, I enjoyed my company with my parents, I enjoyed the food, the shops I frequent, and the driving, although I did hardly drive due to jetlag.
Well, I arrived back in Dublin, picked up by my brother on a Saturday evening, although, predictably, I was missing home and all the good living I had experienced in that week.
One thing I can truly say about what the repeats taught me. TREASURE EVERY FREE MOMENT YOU GET. Cherish the moment, and enjoy it, but keep alert for anything that may be better.
I certainly loved that oppurtunity to return home. It gave me such a wondrous feeling. I have no doubt that it certainly will be a fun fun time for many more times to come.
Well, now I am back in Dublin, back in the grind of things, working out whether I should join the PMCSA committee this year or not, but I am happy being able to spend time at home following my rearranging of the Sony LCD TV to a more suitable position.
My brother says the new position will prove to be a distraction, but I suppose I could use it to attract my usual friends for some fun and frolic, and certainly for some good ol' DVD enjoyment.
Probably the one thing interesting this week apart from making new friends was a comment by Lorraine, that I had everything. Do I have everything? Yeah, I do, not in a millionaire kind of way, but as in, I have got love, I have got friends, I have got material goods, I have accommodation, I have a car (well, technically, I share that with my brother), I have luxuries. I don't have everything. If I did, I would have a beautiful GF to go along with all of it. And a smashing income. But I don't have either, so I don't have everything.
I know who I'd have liked to have been my GF.. lol.. perhaps a real long time now. But no, i'm sticking to my promise for the time being, the promise I made to family friends, and family, that I'd be single until I graduated. And plus, the fear of relationships not working out is rather great. It always takes two to tango. Until I am swayed on that belief, I think I can hold out for the foreseeable future that I am single.
As to whether I am available is dependent on how the person sways me as a person and friend.
Haha... anyway, enough of my ramblings.
Dublin is boring. But I have also had one great friend in Platini for his warmth and kindness in the face of adversity that we both faced in the last few months.
And of course, many others who kept me motivated and kept me positive.
i regret coming to Ireland for medicine now, but I don't regret making the friends I've made. Ireland is a culture change for me, perhaps a good thing.
Sigh. :)
Hope you haven't fallen asleep by then.
Haven't?
Good.
Because I forgot to mention, that on one of the days back in KL.. I think Tuesday lunch time-ish, I went to TIME Bookstore in Bangsar Shopping Centre, and bought RM 900 worth of books.
Anyway. Well, I haven't much more to update with actually.
I saw World Trade Centre with Plat, Steve and Yo. i met up with friends old and new.
I saw a dead corpse (cadaver) for the first time.
I stick to Ham & Cheese sandwiches for lunch now.
I dunno. I got lazy writing now. :P
Ah well.. Hope you have fun reading this!
I've been spending time mostly thinking about home. About... the fun and the great times I should have had with my family and friends in the course of the whole 4 month summer break that I had. i regret coming to Ireland for medicine now, but I don't regret making the friends I've made.
